Comments: Greetings, all. Merry Christmas! One of my sons gave me a copy of "War Slang," the second edition of a 1994 work by Paul Dickson, in which the author identifies slang
used by soldiers from the Civil War to the War in Iraq. Of course, there is a Vietnam section. As he writes in his preface to the work, … (W)hat comes through in much of this material
is a sense of humor, irony, and comradeship.” I chuckled to myself and occasionally out loud last night as I read the chapter on Vietnam slang. When I laughed out loud, everyone in the
room wanted to know what I was laughing about, and I would explain it to them. They laughed, too.
For example, I found out that I was a “Betty Crocker,” that is “A serviceman who is
assigned to Saigon (i.e., one who is safe behind a desk, assuming an almost domestic role.)” I laughed, especially remembering you guys who were at TSN when rockets and mortars rained down on
top of you (there were no attacks on TSN during my tour there). Frankly, I had never heard that slang term before … but I guess it was like the unwritten rule of never referring to the
“Commander” as the “Old Man” to his face.
Of course, we all know this is a “family-oriented” site, so some of the slang we used perhaps should not find its way onto the Viewbook. But
Dickson’s book got me to thinking about the slang I used and heard during my tour, June 1970-1971, near the end of the war. I’ll bet we can come up with some slang that is not on Dickson’s list.
Whatta ya think? Give us your Vietnam war slang and define it for us. Any takers?

Comments: Holidays have always been a time of merriment. But this holiday season, along with many others that many of us veterans recall, will be somewhat bitter sweet.
Today, as well as in our "back in the day", many of our brother and sister service members are serving away from their loved ones. Their loyalty and dedication to their country, to their loved
ones, and to themselves, must not be forgotten. Many will find their rewards throughout their lives knowing that when their country beckoned, they responded.
Many have already won their
rewards by giving the ultimate sacrifice: Rewards that are more profound than anything they could have received from this mortal world. Our respect and our prayers go out to the
families and loved ones of those who return no longer from those terrible journeys into war.
Whether they were engaged in previous wars, or in the current conflicts, we must never forget them, or
the sacrifices each of them made. Yesterday was Dec. 7th. Many claim it as a day of infamy. No matter the name, the sacrifices made by the millions that answered the call
of this great nation must never be swept from our hearts. It should matter not where they served, where they died, or where they lived afterwards, this nation and all her people must always
remember that without the sacrifices made by veterans of all our wars, this land of the free would not be.
To all who served, are serving, and to those who will serve tomorrow, this nation owes them
the ultimate "Thank you".
To those same, I wish them all a holiday season of wonderful warmth, love, and caring. May our good Lord stand behind each to ensure victory and an everlasting
freedom.

Got my copy of the Tan Son Nhut Association 2008 CD the other day. Another great production by the association! Hats off
to Charles Penley for producing it, and to those who contributed to it.
I found the .pdf story of the last couple of weeks at Saigon in April, 1975 to be riveting. The American
officers who were running the show at this time are likely unsung heroes. They aided thousands in gaining their freedom in an increasingly hostile environment.
The loss of three American lives during the period was tragic, but that it was ONLY three American lives seems a small miracle.
I guess I never tried to learn the details of this sad conclusion before.
The news footage was depressing enough. But I have learned, thanks to the CD, that there was heroism on the part of the Americans right down to the last lift-off.

Attack Helicopter Company, the USAF jets and all kinds of other aircraft, the on post Vietnamese artillery and tanks. It was men and women on the ground, who saw something suspicious and
reported it immediately. Some took the initative and went on their own, to help defend the installation.
The 377th Security Police Squadron had augumentee's who worked with us for ninety days at a time.
The medics who went into harms way to help those that needed help. The Fire Department who had to put out so many fires. The Explosives Ordinance Disposal personnel who had
to defuse rockets, mortars and grenades. These is just a few of the many, many people that deserve recognition.
I stand tall and raise my right hand smartly in a salute and lower it slowly,
to all personnel who was on the installation during those times of extra hardship and danger.

2. Large aerial photograph of Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Vietnam.
3. A six foot circular rug that he had in his office at Tan Son Nhut. It has the 377th Combat Support Group emblem woven into the rug.
4. A three foot circular rug that he had in his office at Tan Son Nhut. It has the 7th Air Force Patch, woven into the rug. If you happened to appear before Col Peebles for
disciplinary actions, such as an Article-15, you would be called upon this rug, to receive your punishment.
All four of the items mentioned above will be brought to the next TSNA Reunion.

I believe the 1st or 2nd of Feb 1068, due to sappers and other misc. reasons.
We were not armed and depended solely on the 377th Security Police Squdron, to keep us safe. I did not know,
and this is a very good thing, how much we were in danger and the extent of the attack until many, many weeks later when I was with one of your SP’s at the NCO club. Of course I thought about
half of what he told me was “GI” talk. I found out after I rotated that he was probably minimizing the event.
At any rate, I want to say for myself and for many other men, how much we

Their sacrifices must not go un-noticed.
For many of you, the holiday season was spent in places like Tan Son Nhut, in the
Republic of South Vietnam, some fourty years ago. Hardly seems that long to some, longer to others.
I drew the short stick and had to work on Christmas day in 1971. Those who
drew the long sticks were given the opportunity to attend Bob Hope's Christmas show. As it turned out we all got to see the entire film of the show, which was several hours long.
Oh man,
those memories are getting harder to recall. Guess that's part of the natural process of "getting older".
I often wish that I had kept a written or recorded journal during that year.
I try to remember names and faces, but I can't seem to keep them together.
Enough rambling. Just wanted to wish every one a "Happy Thanksgiving and a very Merry Holiday season."

Comments: This is a beautiful and tasteful slide show of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. It is accompanied by George Jones singing a very moving song about 50,000 names on the Wall.
You can scroll through the pictures and read the lyrics at the same time. I'll bet anyone who has been there get dewey-eyed.
You will probably want to pass this on to any Vietnam
Vet you know or their families.
This is terrific.

Thank you, Sue Ellen, for the great pictures of Don & John (sounds like a 50's/60's singing duet). We don't see
them often enough. It's great to know they are still up, out and about, and at The Wall on this landmark weekend marking the 25th Anniversary of the Vietnan Veterans Memorial. I'm sure

1. The national Personnel Records Center (NPRC) has provided the following website for veterans to gain access to their DD-214 online:
http://vetrecs.archives.gov/
2. The Department of Defense has now recognized that Agent Orange has a direct link to Diabeter I and II and Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) in men over 50 yrs old and you were on the ground
in-country. Veterans were told to contact their local Department of Veterans Affairs or http://www.va.gov to locate a facility and

For years, many of us who served in the Southeast Asian theater never heard "Welcome Home" and "Thank You for your service".
Well, I want to say it, "Welcome Home and Thank You". When
I see someone who is currently in the military, I try to thank them. I don’t want them to feel like some of us did coming home.
We are brothers and sisters in arms, who have been in harms way.
Those serving today are several generations removed from us, however, they are still are our military family.

Son Nhut on 14 Aug 72. Worked with USAF Advisory Group in a Bldg between HQ 7AF & 600 Photo Sq, across from the Camp Alpha entrance. In December 1972, I moved to HQ MACV and worked in
the Directorate of Operations in the frag shop. This is where tactical air missions were put together & disseminated to the individual units throughout SEA. Worked on putting everything
together for Operation Linebacker II. We relocated to NKP after the ceasefire. I left TSN on 10 Feb 73.
I remember those working dogs very well. Late one night, I was
walking to our jeep on the other side of a passage between 2 bldgs in our duty compound. As I came through between the buildings, not really paying attention to much as I remember, I met up with a
dog handler & his dog. All I remember was this huge dog being inches from my face and the handler having his AR-15 pointed at me. Actually, I think I spooked them as much as they did me.
After that, every time I walked through that passage, I was sure to make enough noise that someone would know I was coming.

Comments: Hi Charles and others:
Thank you for another newsletter.
Well, the 40 image retrospective exhibit of shots I took in Saigon while in Vietnam as an army photographer has
come and gone. It was up in Lakewood, Washington for 30 days, and thought you and others might be interested in one of the results. A local family originally from Saigon came to settle
in my area. They opened first one, then two, and soon three restaurants. They sponsored my exhibit, and then, because I am still in the photo business, contracted with me to produce
menu photos of all their items (60 at last count) and to redesign their menu. They asked if I had returned to Saigon since the war, which I had not. They then asked if I thought I might
ever like to go back. I related that I had thought about it, but because of the costs, it was not high on my list. They then suggested they would like to have me return with them in
February. They would put me up in family accommodations for the time I would be there, and I would be free to update my photo exhibit by capturing Saigon as it is today. If this
materializes I could hardly turn down such an opportunity.
So, what I'd like to know is, who amongst you have been back, is there anything left of the air base and what, if any, difficulties have you
had in your travels? Were you free to photograph and talk freely with citizens? Is there anything you might suggest for the trip? Is there anything I can do for the
association while there?
Again, this is not locked in like my last set of orders sending me there were, but I'd like to be better prepared this time, should the offer hold. As a relatively
new member I do not know if articles have been published by others that have returned, but since it is always difficult to fill pages (I know. I published a newspaper for a time before one of my
retirements, and I continue to publish newsletters for a few organizations, including the Lions Club) it would be interesting to hear what others have experienced. By the way, are there any other
members out there that are also members of Lions Clubs? That too might make a good story.
Members and readers can reply directly if they like, but there are probably others that would like
to tune in.

service. My Father, James Bloom, would have told you that he had the honor to serve in the Central Security Control while you accomplished the mission. He would have told you, as he
told me, that no finer men could be found. He would have told you that he remembered each and every one of you that he met or that he came into contact with over the radio with a reverence and
fondness that only brothers in arms could share. His stories were ones of nick names and call signs but more importantly they were stories of young men in an impossible and unenviable position.
My Father passed away on September 24, 2007. I wish to thank the men of the 377th Security Police Squadron that gave me the period 1968 through 2007 to share with my Father. You
did that as a team and you gave me that gift without knowing it at the time.
I am certain that my Father is now seeking out those that made the ultimate sacrifice. If I know my father I
would suspect he is coordinating to have a keg of beer and a BBQ set up for when you all arrive.
As an Air Force retiree myself, I salute you. An organization does not make the man; instead
you all made the organization. Take pride in your accomplishments.

I spent the last year of the war at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, as an Air Force medic ... attached to the 377th Combat Support Group.
It was a very small dispensary near the Army heliport. Although stationed at TSN , being it was the closing days of the war, the Air Force medics had to fly all the "dustoff" flights as if we were in the Army, as medics. Those Army pilots were GREAT to work with. But ... being 18 years old we had little fear and thought we were gonna live forever !!!
Anyway I was glad to find this "site" and as I said, will mail my membership in the morning.
I was in Vietnam from Mar 1972 - Feb 1973 .... I was due to leave Mar 10, 1973 but since the treaty was signed, I got to leave about 2 weeks early --- (all U.S. troops had to be out in 60 days after the treaty was signed.)
I'll write a longer note later.
Thanks again for a place "we" can be welcomed!!!!

My name is Dick Willis and I am trying to obtain information on a Navy E-6 (CTR1) Walter Ray Woods, Jr. who was killed on his way from the Republic of the Philippines on 11/12 December 1971. His plane went down enroute to Tan Son Nhut airbase. The plane was a C-2A out of Cubi Point, PI and carried himself and about 9 others including the pilot and crew.
He was a Cryptologic Technician First Class in the Navy and over there out of the San Miguel, PI Communications Station.
I am trying to find out any information that could be provided from anyone who may know about this tragic accident. I married his former wife and have adopted his two daughters. He has 4 beautiful grandchildren now too.
The details I am looking for may assist me in getting his name and those of the others on that flight inscribed on the Viet Nam Memorial Wall here in Washington, D.C.
If you could provide any information or point me in the direction of someone else who may be able to help his children and grandchildren would be forever grateful.

Comments: Today, the Tan Son Nhut Association, received a large package from UPS.
The package was from Joyce Hill, who had sent eight slide projector carosel containers, full of slides. Also included were two boxes of individual slides.
She has donated them on behalf of her brother, with the understanding that they will eventually go to Texas Tech University. They are slides of Tan Son Nhut.
Joyce's brother, TSgt Kenneth Hensby, was assigned to the 1964th Communications Group, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Vietnam, April 1969 - April 1970.
I will go through them over the next several days and put many of them on the TSNA 2008 CD.
This TSNA 2008 CD will be ready for sell on Nov 1, 2007. The cost will be $16.00 and the shipping and handling will come out of that money.
Thank you very much, Joyce.

Comments: Today is Sep 11, 2007 and once again we are in limbo. For we are frozen in time with memories of every second of every day the World Trade Center was so savagely attacked. The Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania became bonded to the Twin Towers in another day of infamy.
Take a pause, say a prayer and remember the million and millions who were affected in some way - small or large - by the War of Sep 2001.
Y'all are on my list. Please, remember me on yours.
Love,

P.S. Remember U.S.A. There were 87 countries who lost people in the Towers. Remember them, too.
Thank You.

I have a small “mystery” question for you – and to put on the site if you wish.
My nephew lives in Baltimore, MD, and recently saw some bumper sticker and or decals on a vehicle.
He said one looked like an Army based item, and the other Marine Corps. One of them had “Vietnam 66-73” on it, and I believe it was that one that said “Dusters” on it as well.
The other said “Quad Search Lights” in Marine Corps red and gold.
Any ideas what he might have been seeing??Thanks,
Larry

I was in country 7 days before the start of the Second Tet Offensive.
Now I am retired and have gotten letters from friends but need assistance in finding important information.
I am looking for anyone in the 377th Civil Engineering Squadron, living in the barracks compound. That lived near the main gate. Personnel stationed there who worked with in Fuel systems maintenance, even the truck drivers of the refuelers which was a separate MOS
Biggest thing I need is any records of the two helicopters that crashed on separate occasions. I witnessed them crashing during their landing pattern. One was down from the Main Gate inbound to landing, crashed and burned
No one survived that crash
Second helicopter, was also coming for a landing in open field, along side of the chow hall or PX/Theater, as I remember. It crashed and burned, no survivors.
Need to find dates on these crashed and the details of a report that someone did on the shelling on Tan Son Nhut. Such as base report of crashes or maybe base fire department report?????
Also worked part time at PX. Stocking after hours, those personnel, might be helpful.
Any help will be greatly be appreciated.
Thank You

He passed away four years ago due to a lengthy illness associated from exposure to agent orange. He volunteered for a second tour from 1970 - 1971. He just felt like he should go back for the guys that were there ...
It was great to see the website. It makes me feel a little closer to him. I am his youngest daughter and have always been curios about this air base, this far away place that my dad went to when I was a baby. He became very ill soon after he retired, and I know others have too.

I was able to get Wayne in touch with the flight line supervisor for that night, and he remembered Wayne being wounded and wrote a letter to the AF in support of the award.
On August 3rd, Wayne wrote to tell me that the AF had approved the award. He was presented with it at a ceremony at McDill AFB on August 13th.

From: The President of Vietnam Veterans of America and the Chairman of the 25thAnniversary of The Wall Parade
Dear Vietnam veterans, friends & associates,
Saturday, November 10,2007, marks the 25thAnniversary of The Wall, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the Mall in Washington, DC. To commemorate this event, perhaps the only event of its kind with widespread significance to an entire generation of veterans and their families, Vietnam Veterans of America ("VVA") is hosting a parade befitting the generation of veterans who served.
This parade will be the "Welcome home" that many of the 9 million plus men and women who served on active duty during this era, never had. We expect a minimum of 50,000 plus veterans and their families to come to Washington and join us. The parade is open to all veterans’ organizations, posts, etc., to proudly march with the affiliation of their choice:
Military unit or veterans’ service organization
Contingent of a state or city
Fellow uniformed services who served(i.e. Police, Fire Departments)
Veteran motorcycle groups
Teachers, City, and Federal workers who served
Veterans from all walks of life
We invite you to be part of this historic event. Below is further information, which affords an expanded focus and scope of this event. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. One of our Parade Committee members will follow up with you to discuss your groups anticipated participation, and answer any questions you may have.
Please pass the word along to all groups who deserve to participate in this wonderful event. For more information, visit:
http://vva.org/25thEvent/event_info.htm or call toll free at 1-877-727-2333
Join us on this very special day of celebration and reflection as a grateful nation extends a heartfelt and symbolic ‘Thank You for Serving’ day of recognition.
Sincerely,
John Rowan

Comments: A few days ago, I was in a Wal-Mart store in my hometown of Jonesboro, Arkansas. As I loaded my purchases on the conveyor belt to be checked out by the youthful Wal-Mart associate/cashier, an elderly gentleman pushed his shopping cart to the same checkout stand. I looked at the baseball cap he was wearing. It was black or dark navy blue and stitched in gold on the front were the words "World War II Vet" and a few other words that I do not remember now. A thin smile parted my lips. When the checking out was over and so the young Wal-Mart associate at the counter could hear me, I extended my hand over his shopping cart for a hand shake, looked him straight in the eye, nodded in the direction of his hat, and said, "Thank you for your service."He smiled, firmly shook my hand, and spoke the words, "You’re welcome."
As I walked away, I tried to imagine what life would be like in our world today if he and the other members of his generation had not served and sacrificed and won the war.
I sometimes get "Thank" from folks when they find out I’m a Vietnam vet, but, boy, it really felt good to extend my own "Thanks" to a member of the nation’s greatest generation.

It is now 0725 hours, 4 July. Welcome to

I can still hear those words very clearly from the Army Corporal who greeted us at Tan Son Nhut. Yes, today marks 40 years since this then 19 year old A1C (then E4) set foot on that historic air base
for the most exciting, frightening, rewarding, horrific and proudest year of my existence.
Within that 12 month span, as a photographic technician with the 6470th & 460th RTS, the E4 grade was changed from Airman First Class to Sergeant, the Cardinals beat the Red Sox in the World Series, the Packers beat the Raiders in Super Bowl II, the '68 Tet Offensive took place, the siege of Khe Sanh (I hope I spelled that correctly) and the Battle of Hue, the assassinations of Dr. King and
Bobby Kennedy, and the May 6th Mini-Tet, as we now know it, all took place and literally changed the course of history.
I returned to my family in Baltimore, MD (I have been in Chicago now since 1978) on July 4, 1968.
There has been no other time in my life that I have felt more proud to be an American, than that one year tour of duty at Tan Son Nhut Air
Base. I am really proud of my small contribution toward keeping this country as great as it is, and I thank all of you who served and are now serving in our armed forces.

I had just arrived at Tan Son Nhut, the evening of the 12th, from the U.S.
In fact we were going to sleep on a bus that night because Camp Alpha was full. We didn't get to sleep however - some of us were pulled off the bus and put on baggage detail. I was taken along with some buddies to the mess hall. It wasn't long after we were at the mess hall that we heard what sounded like quail flapping their wings, flying right over top of us.
Then we heard explosions. We felt that we had to get out of the mess hall, so we crawled until we found what we felt was a safe place. Of course like so many of us we were without rifles - they hadn't been issued to us yet.
Finally when daylight came we went to find the rest of our guys. I caught up with Johnny Cotten, he would become my best buddy in Nam. In fact Johnny saved my life on January 3, 1967 when we were both hit, at the same time.
Johnny, is an amazing guy.
Despite being hit through the chest, the grenade knocked out 3 ribs, spleen, punctured a lung he managed to push me forward, through bush and a pig pen because we were being pursued.
I was totally disoriented by the grenade that also killed two of our buddies. It gave me a concussion and knocked out my hearing in my right ear permanently, my left ear temporarily.
Anyhow getting back to Tan Son Nhut. After I found Johnny, we went to look for David Wells, he had also became a close friend, as well. We couldn't find David and were told that he was killed.
We found out later that he wasn't killed but was seriously wounded and was sent to Japan.
I've tried at times to locate David but have been unsucessful.
I'm wondering if he ever made contact with your group.
I believe that David Wells, was from Fresno California, when we went to Nam.

repairman, I worked mainly on C-130's from CCK AB Taiwan. I was TDY at Cam Rahn Bay, Da Nang, and various other sites to do maintenance on Herky's and Caribou's. We also had RB-57,
C-47, C-141, & F4-E's.
I read some interesting graffiti in the john behind our Quonset hut. "As I slide down the banister of life, Viet Nam will always be a splinter in my rear end."
"If God wanted me to be a lifer, I would have been born with green baggy skin."
It was an interesting two tours and it sure beat Kessler AFB, in Biloxi MS., where I came from, as instructor in
doppler. I took my second tour to avoid going back to Kessler.

Comments: I am a member of the Tan Son Nhut Association, composed of veterans who served at Tan Son Nhut, Vietnam. The organization is preparing a CD of photos for its members, and
one section will be memorial photos of our comrades who were KIA. One of those was Major Richard Duane Appelhans, who was shot down over Laos in October 1967. There is no photo of him
available through public sources. I did a Google image search and came up with a Capt. Richard Appelhans on your website, an Army officer. Given the unique last name, I am wondering if he might be related to Major Appelhans. There was no link on his photo for further information, so I am hoping that you might forward this e-mail to him, so I can find out if he is related. I don’t recall Maj. Appelhans as being married, but I know he had a sister and your Capt. Appelhans may be related and help us in obtaining a photo.
Below is a link to the TSNA website:

if you click on View Book you will see discussion of the CD project. If you click on "Memorial" you
will see the listing for Maj. Appelhans. Any help you can give us in honoring our comrade will be greatly appreciated.

Comments: Have a Safe Memorial Day,
I was glancing through Gary's photos of the Reunion and I got this sense of a "Family" growing more at each Reunion. Even though I couldn't
make it this year, I felt that sense of "Brotherhood" was enjoyed by all and I sure missed that.
I would like to thank Wayne and Toby for everything they have done for TSNA, and to all the officers
past and present, you are the glue that holds us together. Wayne I just wish, I could have been there to personally shake your hand but as you know, we just moved to South Carolina and we closed
on our house that week. I will call soon.
Charles, Bob Laymon and Harold Boone ... missed you guys. We had some great conversations in the past. Charles, I
see Janice had a bottle of VO with a "Shortimers" ribbon. Where on earth did you find that?
As I write this, I am getting ready to leave for another reunion in Albuquerque, NM with a group
from Tuy Hoa AFB. We are going to Kirtland AFB, the home of the 377th. So I am looking forward to that visit.
Thank ya'll ... till the next time,

Comments: Well, here it is: another year gone by, still in the same shape we were in last year.
This is the time for us to remember all of our fallen comrades. We must also keep in our hearts that feeling of patriotism. I realize it's most difficult under the current conditions. However, we all remember when we answered this country's call. It was the call of our country, not the call of the wild.
Our country sent us to do a job, and we did it. We won, however unfortunate it was to convince many of our fellow countrymen. Even today, there is still a lot of doubt as to who actually won, or lost that war. Today, our young men and women serving in harms way maintain that same feeling of partriotism and belief in their country.
We must not let them down. No matter which side wins or looses, our soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen certainly deserve every single ounce of respect and love that we can muster.
Our hearts must remain with them through to the end. We love them and wish them the very best in their efforts. Lest we forget our own past,
which we cannot do nor should we.
Monday should be a day of total devotion to our fallen countrymen. They,
and we, will forever remember the call that lured us into harms way. That feeling of satisfaction knowing that we responded and served with pride. Today's young warriors, and some of them are older also, will forever recall that same feeling of having served with pride. No matter the outcome, we, as patriots, lovers of this country, and sharers of that burden of war, must never give up on this country. We must continue to make the sacrifices if we are to remain a truely free people.
Here's wishing everyone a save and happy holiday weekend. Welcome Home to all those who have been there.

I’ve been too busy for my own good since coming back from the reunion. Allow me to push this daily “stuff” aside for a moment and reflect on our recent get together.
Mary and I were newbies at Dayton, but that feeling didn’t last long for either of us. There was a feeling of family membership that replaced our anxieties within hours. If logging on to the TSNA website was a first step for me a year or so ago, then walking into the hotel at Dayton and meeting all you folks in person was truly like a home coming. It was great to put faces with names, and see many of the people who make this organization what it is. And it was a privilege to meet all the other TSNA members and Scatbackers who have a special place in their heart for their memories of Tan Son Nhut Airbase and the people they knew there.
I’m thinking of that flag again. That last American flag to fly over Vietnam. Like when I first saw it, I’m getting choked up. These people here at work are going think I have an emotional problem. Guess I do. I’ll bet many of you have the same problem when it comes to that flag. An operational airbase for 13 years, it is mind-boggling to think of how many military organizations comprised the fabric of Tan Son Nhut’s history. There is no doubt that every person who served there owns a thread in the fabric of that flag.
Love to you all on this Memorial Day weekend.

Comments: I often come and check out the posts but don't leave notes everytime. I did however want to leave one this time.
When I first started using the internet I searched for info on Tan Son Nhut, then attempted to find my dads old squadron. Never found the 6250th Civil Engineers, but happened here, and that was the night my understanding of how special the Air Force was to my dad, Cmsgt Thomas Moore, USAF, spring 1965 to his POW MIA date of October 31 1965. Along with Samuel Adams, Charles Dusing, and Jasper Page who managed to escape.
I have recieved emails from many of you, and there are some of you that literally "have become my adopted uncles" and I have come to know, Bill Price and Kailey Wong as wonderful caring close friends.
I still hope some day, I will find others who per chance might remember my dad. Even hope to make connection with maybe the flight crew of the chopper who flew them to Vung Tau for he R&R on Oct. 30 1965. But if I don't , I just wanted to let all of you who served and returned with honor, how much I thank you. How much you all are important to us kids whose dads did not make it home except with flags draped with them, and how much those of us whose dads are still MIA need you still, to learn and to heal, and to help us with the fight we pursue to bring any remains home.
Daddy's case has had a couple of excavations but no luck as of yet, but I am determined as ever to contiune to keep our Government and officals pressured to their promises. Never leave another behind, and give us the fullest possible accounting. Not only for the past , but for those of the present and the future.
Thank You and Gods Speed,
Diane Moore, daughter and PNOK

Comments: Hi, Dear Ones!! Well today we got a new lead .... I love new leads, but my eyeballs seem to give out sooner than they used to!!
Bruce has always felt as tho he and his 25 to 30 "traveling companions" on the TDY had been LOANED to the unit at Tan Son Nhut. No officers or NCO's went with them from Alconbury to Nam, but of course, once there, they had a full compliment of "bosses"!
So I wrote the incredible Charles Penley of "The Tan Son Nhut Association". First day, we got a "hit"!
So now we know that we are looking for ANYONE from the 460th Tactical Recon Wing (In charge of ALL units on the "flight line"), the 460th Tactical Recon Wing, Detachment 1 (Ran a "Mobile Photo Lab" on the "flight line",) or the 16th Tactical Recon. Squadron (Also ran a "Mobile Photo Lab" on the "Flight Line".)
The 12th Tactical Recon. Squadron also had a "Mobile Photo Lab" on the "Flight Line", but they serviced only UN-MANNED planes. The previous units serviced the RF-101, RF-4C, and the RB-57, all Bruce's planes.
Please send this out to one and all, and if ANYONE knows ANYONE who knows ANYONE, PLEASE LET US KNOW!!!!!!! ANY AND ALL INFORMATION MOST GRATEFULLY RECEIVED!!!!!
Many, many thanks to one and all!

Comments: Some information that may help Jean Turner.
The units were probably the 6450th Reconnaisance Intelligence Tatical Squadron. I was in the 13th RITS, 1965 - 1966. Next to 7th Air Force HQ. My second tour was in 1968 - 1969, in the 460th RITS. On the flight line, all units were under the 460th Tactical Reconnaisance Wing.
There were two mobile units on the flight line, the 460th RITS and 16th TRS. All photo recovery was under the 460th Tactical Reconnaisance Wing. Using RF-101, RF-4C and RB-57 type aircraft.
The 12th RITS was under 7th Air Force and was involved in unmanned aircraft. I had lots of friends in that unit. Hope this information helps.
Sure hated to miss the Dayton Reunion. Had my surgery at Walter Reed last week. Seems the TB is gone and it is okay so far.
I was stationed at Wright Patterson AFB, OH., in 1955 - 1956.

Comments: A couple Vets have suggested I look to the 377th for some help, since I guess they "ran most everything" at Tan Son Nhut. Husband Bruce and 25 to 30 other A1C and A2C were sent from Alconbury, UK to TSN, arrived July 1966. No officers or NCO's went with them from Alconbury. When they arrived, their "Mobile Photo Lab" (several "trailers") were all set up and ready for them on the flight line. These airmen were all on the same TDY." They did not go without Officers and NCO's!! It was as tho they were "on loan" to some other unit, but at 18 years old, you don't ask. You do your job.
These friends have suggested I write to the Group, seeking someone who would know what part of the 377th would have been "in charge" of "mobile photo labs", what it would have been called, and is there anyone here with any connections to them. The "12th" and the Aussies both had their own "labs". Most everyone else used the one Bruce worked in.
Would this be "facilities," "administration" or "intelligence?" All the film went to "intelligence.
Many Thanks!!
Bruce & Jean Turner
FROM THE WEB MASTER: Jean, I am going to email you one page from the Tan Son Nhut Association 2006 Revetments Archive, dated July 1996. That page will show most of the units attached to Tan Son Nhut. It might help you in determining which unit would have been in charge of the mobile photo lab.

Comments: Charles, good morning sir. First and foremost, I would like to say it was indeed a pleasure to finally meet you and sit down and talk. It's nice to meet old friends from years gone by and I feel, I can call you that, "A Friend."
My wife and I both enjoyed sitting down and going over some old stories and pictures from your archives in your computer and on display. The entire Reunion was a success from our point of view.
I only wish there had been other fellows there from Echo Sector. I remembered various people from Charlie Sector, but never knew them personally while over there.
I'll forward some of our photo's taken while at the reunion and especially look forward to receiving from you the transcript of the Tet Offensive, that we talked about while there. My son in Montana, who is currently in the Security Force, is also interested in reading over it.
I have the tape of the offensive, but I'm looking forward to a copy of your transcript.
Check out some of our photo's taken.

Thank you for having us at the reunion this past weekend. My husband, my brother and I really enjoyed the experience. We attended the banquet -- at some point we'd love to see you guys a little less formal!
We met some very interesting people, learned some things about "history" that we hadn't known prior, and learned all kinds of humorous things about some of the attendees, but I will let my dad decide if our observations are appropriate for public consumption. I'll email him THAT info, and if he decides to share it'll be on his head not mine!
Seriously though, Charles, you seem like a doll, I'm sorry that I didn't get a chance to talk with you directly, and Wayne . . . well, you should go ahead and move to Dayton!

Comments: I was with the 110th Transportation Company "D," domiciled at "Tent City "B, July 1967 -
July 1968."
When the Attack on Tan Son Nhut began, Jan 31, 1968, at approximately 0330 hours, we were transported in a deuce and a half to the runway. We dismounted and began moving toward the western perimeter. We were part of "Task Force 35," under the direction of the 377th Security Police.
By approximately 0900 hours, with alot of help from helicopter air support Huey Gunships and Chinooks, we had worked our way across the runway and into an area where there was a small graveyard. In this area, we took concentrated small arms, rocket, and mortar fire from the area of the Textile building, outside the airfield and accross the road.
I remember trying to get behind one of the small tombstones in that graveyard, which were made of sandstone and pieces of it were being shot away by AK-47 fire.
What surprised me the most, is that we pounded that Textile building with air support and I thought no one could live through it. As soon as we stopped, they would go right back to firing at us.
Our platoon leader was Lieutenant Robert Felton, from Vineland, New Jersey. I always wondered how he made out, he was a good guy.

Comments: If I remember right, didn't they blow up the My Canh, 2 or 3 times, in about a 2 week period?
It seemed like at the time I was thinking, they are doing the same thing they did a few days ago. I might be wrong, but I thought they had claymores in the trees on the ramp side and they put off some concussion grenades on the farside, then when everyone ran to the ramp "boom"! They knew it was a favorite place for upper grade service folks.

Comments: Two of the bombings have special meaning to me. I forget what month it was but I was at the terminal at Tan Son Nhut when it was hit by a rocket attack. May have been April or May of 1965. I was upstairs when the first bomb exploded. I still remember I was there seeing off Sgt Fernando Pola of Ponce Puerto Rico. After the first blast all windows were blown out. I got up to leave after the blast when a Marine grabbed my leg and pulled me back to the floor. If he had not I would have been running down the steps when the second blast hit. That day I got back in my truck and went back to work just like any other day.
The second bombing I was not there but did bring back a lot of memories. As was mentioned in a earlier e-mail about the My-Canh Floating Restaurant. When Sgt Pola left his bunk next to mine was taken over by a new Airman. To this day I wish I could have remembered his name. If anyone has the names of the nine killed on the floating restaurant he was one of them. He had only been there about 1 month when he was down town that night.
I came back to my barracks after working the next day when I found some Sgts going thru his personnel affects. That’s when I found out he was killed. Said he was hard to identify as he was decapitated by the blast. I did not speak much with him as he was on second shift. I do remember he had four kids. To this day I try to remember his name. Funny his kids would now be in there 40's.
Just another couple days in life at Tan Son Nuht.

1. The Holiday Inn is a Holidome with a heated indoor pool and hot tub. So, bring your bathing suits so you can enjoy.

3. I just found out that WPAFB is having their "10th Annual Family Fun Fest Carnival" this weekend.
It has rides, food, and games and is within walking distance from the Museum ( we have bus transportation to/from the Museum both Friday and Saturday). Will have some discount ride coupons available and more can be printed out from

On March 18, 2007 I posted a thank you note to Tim Butz, for giving a heads up concerning omitted decorations and corrections to our DD-214's. I included the procedures that I received from my VA service Rep. to pursue corrections. I am happy to report that the Air Force has already responded, April 16, 2007, and as a result a Presidential Unit Citation, 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and Combat V will be added to my AFOUA, a Bronze Service Star added to my Viet Nam Service Medal, Republic of Viet Nam Gallantry Cross With Palm, an Oak Leaf Cluster added to my Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Korean Defense Service Medal are all to be added to my records.
All above devices were sent to me along with the notification of correction except for the Gallantry Cross, which is a foreign award and is not provided by the AF and must be purchased.
There is still one more award that they are checking on in another agency.

Comments: Dear Mr. Salisbury,
I was given your e-mail address by Robbie Robertson, of the Tan Son
Nhut Association. Robbie believes you may be able to help me track down any of my father's USAF buddies from his stay in Vietnam, and perhaps beyond.
My Dad's name was Donald W. Granlund. Don died in 1997. Unfortunately, our family drifted apart when I was very young, and I grew up in Europe with my Mom, while he continued his career and eventually retired from the USAF in the mid 1970's.
When Don died, I was able to, as the executor, to obtain his military records, and although they paint a fragmentary picture, I've been able to retrace some of his steps in the Air Force. However, his real life in the USAF is a mystery to me, and this is where groups like the TSNA come in.
Don was in the 1964th some time in 1964, I know this because he reenlisted while he was there. Also, he was in Chateaureaux, after Vietnam and before returning there for another tour (I think), and I've posted an announcement on
that board.
Hopefully this message finds you well, and maybe you'll be able to help. A real bonus for me would be to see some photos of my Father in Vietnam, I have none. This is part of a larger project, in part for my benefit, but also mostly for my 9 year old son, Edward.
I am now a retired USN CWO, and my maternal grandfather was a retired Carabiniere who fought in Africa, prior to WWII and beyond. There is a Granlund who fell at Gettysburg, and so, as you can imagine, I'm quite keen on documenting this history for my son, so that he may gain an appreciation for those who came before him, not with the intent of making him join, but to allow him, as he matures, to understand.
Meanwhile, thank you for your patience in reading this, and also, belatedly, for your service.
Sincerely,
John A. Granlund

Comments: Hell-o Charles !
I don't get around this way often enough, but today seems a little special to me as you know ... it was on 13 April, 1966, we at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, RVN, were attacked like never before!
About 240 some B-40 rockets and mortar rounds, in less than 15 minutes! It seemed like everywhere you looked something was blowing up, all at once!
It was the first time I ever heard mortar rounds go overhead close enough to hear that "covey of quail" sound, as they went by ... then ya hear a big SLAAM!! ... it got my attention!
That was one long night. Some of the crazy things I saw that night. I saw two US Army Officers in a 6-by, stop, get out ... then one aims his Thompson submachine gun into the air, fires off a full 30 round magazine, then jumps into the ditch! I guess he wanted to be able to say he fired his weapon (probably got a bronze star for that brave act).
I wouldn't have missed it for the world ... I volunteered for Vietnam when we found out there was a war going on ... I even convinced Bob Arvai to volunteer with me ... I don't think Bob, was real happy about it after we got there, but he sure was happy when we left. Bob was a good card player, and he made some money while in the RVN.
'Nuf said.
God bless you Charles, keep up your good work, you make many people happy!

Comments: Allow me to introduce myself. My name is John Granlund, I am a retired US Navy, Chief Warrant Officer and the son of Donald William Granlund, who was a member of the 1964th Communications Group, sometime in 1964, who may have served with you in Vietnam.
If he didn't, and you didn't know him, I'll excuse myself with maybe a request for you to forward this email to someone who may have known him then.
The reason I ask, is that at that time, I was two years old, and like many families at the time, our's also, was torn apart by those years.
I grew up in Italy with my Mom, and many years later was able to reconnect, albeit briefly, with my Father. Don died in 1997, and when he passed, I was the executor of his last will. I came to own everything he left behind. But most precious to me, I came to own what he saved of his military career. Which was varied, interesting, but had many blank spots in it.
I'm also a Father and compiling a series of binders, that contain various military histories in our family. To include that of the "Grandfather," he never met.
To do so I'm attempting to track down anyone who might have served with him and might have some insight into how he might have been. Trust me when I say that I have very thick skin. Twenty-one (21) years in the Navy, made sure of that. I've heard it all, good and bad. For now, I thank you for your time, and cross my fingers that this might work.
Sincerely,
John A. Granlund

Well I agree that it would show solidarity with those airmen who have come under fire in Korea and Vietnam; I don’t count for much in the scheme of things.
Why don’t you all send a letter to Lt. Gen. Roger A. Brady, Deputy Chief of Staff, Manpower and Personnel, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. stating your opinion.
It couldn’t hurt and it might help. Lt. Gen. Roger A. Brady's Biography can be found at URL:

According to his orders, he was with the 593rd, while at Tan Son Nhut, in 1964-1965. I believe the 593rd was either a joint assault company or a signal battalion. (I apologize for not knowing for sure, but I do not have his orders in front of me at the moment.) His name is James "Jim" Armes. He cannot recall any names of guys he served with, mainly because it has been so long.
If anyone remembers him, please drop him at my e-mail above: I'll let him know about this site.

I was NCOIC of the weapons/ammo conex storage assigned for each member of the unit and Administrative office clerk for 24/7 dining hall operations. MSgt McFarland was the NCOIC of the Dining Hall. Our unit was not on the main base but located near the flight line where TDY arrivals processed in/out. Frequent visitors to the dining hall was the Security Police Patrols. We called them RAT patrols.
They were always welcome as they came heavily armed with those M-60's etc.
For those of you that remember him ............... CMSgt William Dubious, was the big tall African-American Chief, in charge of the Food Services section. He made sure the troops had good food. With special interest on the 24/7 dining hall.
One of the hard things do observe on a daily basis was seeing those flatbed trailers, stacked 5 coffins high, moving slowly onto the tarmac, making it's way to a C-141 to return our KIA. To this day I still see it and seem not to be able to forget it.
According to a Air Force Sergeants Associations report, TSN was also home to Operation Ranch Hand (Agent Orange) for 9 years. Using that funny looking C-123 aircraft.

Comments: Thanks very much for your assistance. I’ve already received an email from one of your members, pointing me to an association more directly related to Operation Babylift.
Part of the reason I contacted you was to gauge if you had any veterans of the "Babylift" missions in your organization, and if so, how many. We’re hoping to contact those involved in the missions and encourage them to set up a new association, specific to those who participated in or supported Operation Babylift. If your organization already contains a large number of those particular veterans, then I don’t think we would pursue the formation of a new group (because your group would have it pretty well covered!).
If you or any of your group’s officers know offhand that it is or isn’t true that your group contains a large number of Operation Babylift veterans, please let me know, and I’ll pursue other avenues. Thanks again for your time and assistance, and best of luck to you at your upcoming reunion in Dayton. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at the number below if you have any further questions or information.

I retrieved your email addresses from your association’s website.
As the project officer for a new Air Force initiative (led by Lt Gen Arthur Lichte, assistant to the vice chief of staff of the AF) to encourage the formation of new associations and reunion groups, I am researching various missions selected by leadership. One of the proposed groups is anyone involved in Operation Babyliftt. I was wondering if you have any members in your association who were involved in any of those missions. Also, if you don’t have any members who were involved but have any leads for me on existing associations related to Operation Babylift, I would greatly appreciate that information.
Please feel free to call me at the number below, or reply to this email with your information, and I will call you at your convenience. Thanks in advance for your time, and I look forward to speaking with you.

Comments: It is getting close to the deadline for signing in and getting your name registered for the Reunion in Dayton, Ohio of the TSNA family. If at all possible, you must make every effort to attend, even if it's only for the banquet. The family is getting smaller every year and the remaining family remembers their brothers and
sisters. It is not our duty to do this. It is our Honor.
You may not consider yourselves as heroes. A Hero is someone who gets up every day (no matter where they are), takes a look around, puts on their uniform and walks straight out into whatever life is throwing at them. Then, the very next day, they arm themselves with their own courage and do it all again.
After a time, most come home, but they never forget their brothers and sisters who didn't come home. Never! You know something? If the call ever comes for them again, they would answer and once again Walk Tall into the Field that life would designate for them.
We do remember yesterday, today and we will remember tomorrow. We pass this honor to our children, grandchildren and as many of our bloodlines who tell the history of our Family.
Never fear! If you have no bloodline to carry that honor, your Family will remember. You will live forever.
Come and see us. Share the laughter and yes, the tears. We are the Reunion. We are Family.

To: All TSNA Members:
We have many reunion registrations. More than likely Dayton, Ohio will be the largest gathering we've ever seen at a TSNA reunion.
And I sit here, very thankful for those that have registered, but wondering how many members within driving distance from Dayton aren't coming because they can't get away for the entire 4 day reunion.
Do you fit this category? Are you 200 miles away but haven't registered for the reunion because of work or a planned vacation has gotten in the way?
Well, how about driving over Saturday, May 5th for the banquet? Maybe you and a guest can drive over for the entire day to enjoy being with your friends that will be gathering in the hospitality suite. The suite will be the center of attraction, with Charles Penley, our resident TSNA historian and Webmaster. You'll see pictures on his laptop that you've never seen before. Have questions regarding the Tet Offensive against the air base? Charles has all the facts of those fateful days. He was there, manning a M-60 machine gun.
You will meet Janice (Janny) Jones, the sister of Charles Penley. That alone is worth the trip. She is our official TSNA Cheerleader - a patriot and just an adorable lady that will fast become your friend. She might talk your arm and leg off, but believe me, you'll enjoy every single moment.
The cost of the banquet is $45 per person. That includes joining us in the hospitality suite before and after the banquet program. Drive over, have some snacks and your favorite beverage and then enjoy the banquet program.
If this sounds attractive to you, all you need to do is send in the registration form along with $45 per person.
Not a member and don't wish to become one? No problem, you'll be treated like a long time member. Former army or other branch of service and don't feel you'd be comfortable? Yes, you will. I guarantee it.
Your wife says she won't be enjoy being around a bunch of old service members? Yes she will. Once she meets the likes of Janny, Sharon Jernigan, Mary Ann Carlson, my wife, Tobey, and many others, she'll feel right at home. That is what I hear time and time again from past reunion attendees.
Your suit doesn't fit to well? Don't worry, shirt and tie is not required. Charles Penley says he'll be in blue jeans. Pull up a chair and meet Charles - one of the best people you'll ever want to meet in your life.
One more thing and I'll let you go: I'd sure like to shake your hand. It will mean more to me than you'll ever know.

Help!
For the past 3 years the TSNA office has been using an address/mailing program for the official membership listing that is: USER UNFRIENDLY!
The program we use is MyMailList & Address Book. I won't get into all the reasons it is not user friendly, but we must find some other program to use for our membership listing.
Who can step up and help us? YOU, the members. I know there is someone out there that is an expert, and we need to hear from you.
What we need is a stand-alone program. We cannot use:
1. Excel
2. MS Windows or other related address books
3. A Mom and Pop program
We need a professional program. A program that is easy to use, easily backed up and will effortlessly print the membership listing. The program must have sufficient fields (at least 20, that we can customized to fit our needs - such as Date Joined - TSN Dates - TSN Unit, etc., to accommodate all the information required. And the BIGGEST thing, we must be able to export our current file system into the new program. That is an absolute must. My wife, Tobey, set up the original membership listing, typing all the information for each member. She'd rather not go through that again.
If anyone knows of such a program, please call or email me. If you send an email, please put PROGRAM as the subject so I may quickly identify what the email contains.
Thank you kindly,

Military burial arrangements are being made and a graveside ceremony will be held at The Houston National Cemetery. I will let you know the date soon.

I saw the USAF map from Jose Baez and thought I'd take a few moments to put the buildings onto Google Earth. You and your visitors might find it interesting.
I've also attached a copy of a military map of Tan Son Nhut, which I scanned at the US National Archives a few years back. I don't recall
when the Army made it, but was apparently around 1967 ... at least before the new BX and 8th Aerial Port Passenger Terminal were built, since they don't appear on the map.
I've been to Vietnam and TSN several times over the past 20 years. Much of TSN is unrecognizable, having been 'commercialized.' Except for the street-side, the area between the TSN main street and airport (north side of the street, where Hotel 3, Camp Alpha, etc were located) remain under military control and I couldn't get inside for photos or video.
Well, I hope you find the attached useful.

Comments: Would like to thank Mr. Tim Butz, for his post on this forum, March 8 2007, concerning omissions on our DD 214’s. I had never really thought to check. I had just taken it for granted that the AF had included all the Unit Citations that I qualified for. The home computer has made it relatively easy to research, using the info provided by Tim, to get to the website. I started on my quest, lo and behold, Tim was right. I researched all of my old units and found that there are 10 unit citations of one flavor or another, that are not included on my 214’s.
At Tim's suggestion, I contacted my Veterans Service Officer, via email and I received the following reply:
"There is a form you need to complete. It is DD Form 149, Application for Correction of Military Record.
It is a simple two page form that has the mailing address on the second page. I have them in my office or you can download one from either the Department of Veterans Affairs website or the Department of Defense website.
The process is lengthy and will result in a DD-215, issued with the corrections on it. There will be NO NEW DD-214 issued."
The whole process was done at home, the DD Form 149 has been downloaded, filled out, package assembled and is in the mail to the appropriate address. There is some research involved but the form 149 is painless.

First, Lee tours the museum and he reveals the fascinating story (and rare footage) of the highest bailout in history from an American aircraft. Then he tells the history of the Lockheed Starlifter, the Vietnam-era cargo plane made famous when one was designated "The Hanoi Taxi".
Lee also attends a reunion of the surviving POWs who flew on the Hanoi Taxi; then, he reveals the truth about UFOs and the Air Force's top secret Project Bluebook.
Finally, Lee gets to take the controls for some real stick time in a vintage B-25 Mitchell Bomber."

Fellow Tan Son Nhut veterans,
Q. Why should you decide to go to the Tan Son Nhut Association & Scatback 2007 Reunion in Dayton, OH?
A. So you can drink an ice-cold beverage with me in our hotel Hospitality Suite!
However, there is another great reason to travel to the cradle of aviation ...and that is the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Please go to URL:
http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/
The NMUSAF is a destination vacation for all true aviation enthusiasts.
We are planning field trips to the NMUSAF on both Friday and Saturday (4 & 5 May 2007) and while there, some of us will be taking "Class Pictures" with each of the aircraft we were associated with at TSN. For example, the Scatback inventory included:
C-47
C-54
C-118
C-123
T-39
U-3
You have a little over 20 days to send in your registration & book your hotel room for the 2007 Reunion in Dayton. The commitment to attend by fellow TSN veterans is running quite well, so you can plan on reuniting with someone from your Vietnam year-group.
Below is a link to an excellent article about the NMUSAF, written by my friend and fellow SEA veteran, Colonel John T. Correll. Take a look at this new and improved museum facility and then make your mind up to join us for Reunion 2007 in Dayton, OH.
See ya in Dayton!

Comments: I sent this e-mail directly to Gil Simpson, but decided to post it here also. I hope that is OK.
Gil, I arrived at Tan Son Nhut on Nov 22, 1965, and was eventually assigned to the 377th AEMS. I recall a guy by the name of Simpson, that wasn't too hot on going back to the States and apparently had been there awhile. Would that have been you? Never knew the guys first name. The Comm/Nav shops were in trailers, next to a hangar, at first. I forget the organization we were assigned to. Eventually we became the 377th AEMS and were housed in a "Jamesway" building (a canvas Quonset Hut), that someone had decided to paint silver. I heard someone say it looked like a beer can stomped half way into the mud.
Not sure but we may have been on the same shift, in the beginning (swings or mids) and we sat in a large hangar waiting for a work order, there were several of us. I recall the ceiling lights hanging down on long tubes and we could hear the B-52's bombing. I recall it sounding like one continuous explosion that sounded like it lasted forever. While this was going on we could look up and watch those ceiling lights sway back and forth from the vibration. All of us wondering just how close those bombers were, to us. This was before the 377th.
I arrived as an A/1c (three stripes) and made S/Sgt in June of 66. I left on Pan Am, Nov 11, 1966.
Jerry W. McIntosh
M/Sgt USAF (ret)
Also I read a post here somewhere, (I can't find it again) asking about an explosion outside the gate at Tan Son Nhut. I hadn't thought of it in years, jogged my memory a little bit. I can't add any details to the event, but I was on a Dong-Cart on my way back to the barracks. We weren't quite to the drop-off point at the gate when we heard this loud explosion. Of course when we got to the gate, you couldn't get anywhere near it as there were "White Mice" everywhere. Later we learned there was a mo-ped or some sort of a two wheeled vehicle had a Claymore on it and was left leaning up against a large tree, just outside the gate, apparently set to detonate about quitting time. I remember looking at the tree, with no bark on it for about 4 or 5 feet from the ground, and these huge holes from what ever was used in the bomb had been imbedded in the trunk of that tree. Don't recall if anyone was killed or injured.
I have all kinds of stories if anyone would be interested.
Jerry

When I arrived at TSN, in the fall of 1971, for my assignment with the 12th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, I was greeted by my former AFROTC instructor LTC Ed Petty, who took me on a "tour" of the local area in his jeep. He was a Security Policeman and I had thought he was in the 377th Security Police Squadron but may have been with 7th AF, or in some other staff job.
I do not see any record of him on your website and wonder if you or any of your members recall him.

Here is another letter from a past reunion attendee, expressing a positive attitude about the TSNA reunions.
I have not asked anyone to write me regarding their feelings about reunions. They just flow in and I am deeply grateful.
Wayne Salisbury
President
Tan Son Nhut Association
---------------------------------------------------------------------
In reading the letters from Sharon and Janice, I was reminded of the first Tan Son Nhut Reunion, I attended in Dayton, years ago. Being in a large group of people I don't know, has always been very uncomfortable for me, but in spite of that, I wanted to go with Bill.
We arrived a day early as we always do, having to fly in from Oregon. As we waited for the other attendees to get there, I became increasingly more anxious. My anxiety was all for nothing. As people began arriving the next day, it felt like a homecoming event, where everyone was so glad to see you, and welcomed you with open arms.
Though we didn't know anyone there, none of them were strangers -- they were like family you hadn't seen for a long time. We haven't missed a reunion since that one, and it always feels the same. We look forward to seeing everyone again and catching up on their news, as well as meeting new people and welcoming them to our expanding Tan Son Nhut family. Without a doubt, one of the best things we have done is join this Association and attend its reunions. We have met some incredible people who have enriched our lives immensely.
Please come and be with us in Dayton if you can. We'd love to personally say, "Welcome Home!"

I would go to the following US Government web page at URL:

There you will find the address:
National Personnel Records Center
Military Personnel Records
9700 Page Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63132-5100
Also on that web page you will see some blue working: "Standard Form 180."
Click on those blue words and print out the Form-180.
What you will need that form for, is to request from the archives, for your father's 201 File.
This 201 form will show all the military school's, base of assignment's, date's of rank and etc.
When you mail that Form-180, I would also include a zerox copy of your father's death certificate.

He then was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gerhig's Disease) in late 1999 and succmmbed to the illness in February, the next year.
My father was proud but never talked about his experiences in the Air Force. My sister and I have been looking for anybody that either knew what he did or knew him specifically. He was assigned to the 6250th Spt Sq., at Tan Son Nhut, around 1971. We have his awards and DD-214's but no other information. I would appreciate any help in this matter and maybe have my father's name placed on the memorial.

I was just looking at the map shown on the monthly photo. I was surprised to find the location of the 460th FMS AGE shop. Can someone tell me what period of time the map reflects. I'm assuming it was made before the new BX was built. I noticed the base theater being in the same area of the NCO Club. In 1971, the theater was located in the same complex of the new BX. Just curious if the AGE shop shown on the map was the same building, I worked in. To the best of my recollection, it's the same building.
I remember that we went straight up the street from the "compound" and the "hop-tacs" had to stop just before they got to the flight line, then we had to walk a short distance to the shop.
To whomever supplied the map, my thanks.

Ron and others who have inaccurate DD-214's can get their records corrected. If you go to the link below, it will take you to the USAF Historical Research Agency's page, for the 460th Space Wing, the successor to the 460th TRW.
In the decorations section, it has all the awards made to the 460th. You can check to see if any awards were made for the period you were assigned to the 460th.
Any Veterans Service Officer, can help you have your records amended to reflect the unit awards that are not shown on your DD-214.
The Wing was also awarded the, "Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Unit Award," and anyone who served in the Wing is entitled to the award.

Comments: Tan Son Nhut Association - Reunion
My name is Janice Jones - cheerleader.
Hey, hey, hey, to y'all. In Sep 2005, I attended the Reunion of the Tan Son Nhut Association, at Gettysburg, PA. It was fabulous. I knew absolutely no one except Charles Penley and I had spoken via phone to Wayne Salisbury. From the first minute we arrived at the hotel, we were made to feel like family.
Everyone was so nice and all nervousness, just vanished. They even enlisted my help in welcoming the other guests. Hence, the nickname cheerleader, became a part of me. I love these people! They are the Best and we are looking forward to seeing them again. It truly is just a family summer reunion.
Dress as you would dress going to your own get together - except it will have no ants and flying bugs to bother you. It is all indoor. Bring your camera and any "mementoes from your service," with you.
You will love sitting beside Charles Penley, who is the Communications Officer. He has all the pictures, maps and history of TSN. There was a line to sit beside his computer and all of his information placed on the table.
Yes, you can sit there with him and step back into time because that table and the whole reunion becomes a time machine. Each one of you wonderful people is a part of that machine. Y'all bring something to add to our family and y'all will be gifted with something to take home with you. Charles works on the TSNA every day.
Face it! We are not getting any younger and good health is no longer taken for granted. We've lost a few since 2005. If you can do one thing and have the opportunity to go one place where you will reconnect with yourself and buddies, please, this is the time and place. The door is open. Come on in and you will be an instant part of something larger, than you can ever realize. The TSNA family quilt is growing and you should be a part of it. Y'all were part of the Best back then. Come, be a part of the Best now.
Y'all did good. Welcome home!!!
You will meet Wayne Salisbury and his wife, Tobey, who are the good people. They work very hard on this Association and do it with all their hearts. Wayne is the Heart of this TSNA Family, even though he is stepping aside in May. His love and friendship for y'all knows no boundaries. Come and get to know Wayne and Tobey.
P.S. Have a good one & God Bless.

Comments: Charles, I would like to address the reunion experience form the guest's point of view. I have had the privilege of attending the last two TSNA reunions. It has been a very enjoyable and eye-opening experience for me. Just listening to the conversations among the veterans is so very informative. It was so enjoyable watching them open up and begin to feel the friendship of those around them.
I saw that it means so much to all the veterans to have an opportunity to get together and share stories and more importantly feelings about their experiences. They really benefit from the chance to meet with others with backgrounds in Vietnam service.
As a wife/guest at two reunions, I saw first hand how deeply touched the first-time-attendees were to be welcomed by their comrades. It is a very healing experience for them. Those who had previously attended looked forward to renewing friendships forged by the their common background, no matter what their rank, unit or branch of service, or length of time in-country.
A large number of attendees brought family members with them, so I really was able to see how the whole family is bonded and affected by the experience of the veteran. Everyone is friendly, and ready to enjoy visiting and getting acquainted. I have personally made several friends that keep in touch regularly. I think that many of the children and spouses of the veterans learned a great deal about the experiences of their parent/spouse, and perhaps were able to better understand the emotions (hidden or otherwise) that affect their loved one.
Please don't hesitate to attend this year's reunion and bring your family. You will be glad you did. The "field trips' will be great, and there will be plenty of opportunity for fun and educational experiences. If you are the family of a veteran, please encourage your loved one to attend. Again, you will be glad you did.
I'm hoping to see lots of new faces this year, as well as all the friends from years past.
Sincerely,
Sharon Jernigan

The January 2007 Special Edition of Revetments featured the Call for Candidates. As you know we are holding the election for Tan Son Nhut Association Board of Directors during the Dayton, Ohio reunion.
There will be six board member vacancies for the election: President, Secretary, Treasurer, Director of Membership and two other board positions whose duties will be later determined by the elected President.
I have put forth a strong effort to spread the responsibilities among the Board of Directors to avoid having anyone working beyond what is necessary to keep the association going in the right direction.
Your association needs capable people to hold office. Do you have what it takes? Will you submit your name for one of the available positions? Will you stand at the reunion business meeting May 6. 2007 and take the oath of office?
I sincerely hope so. Please let me hear from you.
Thank you.

Seriously though, I went to the last Tan Son Nhut Assocition in Sep 2005 and had alot of fun. It was my first time attending a reunion of any kind. There were ninety-six people in attendance and most of the people, I did not know. It did not matter, it is the coming together of Vietnam Brother's and Sister's. It was all casual wear. For the banquet, I wore blue jean's and a nice shirt.

Comments: Hello, my name is Jose Antonio Baez Ortiz, just call me Jose. Right now I'm living in Puerto Rico but I grew up in N.,Y.C., the big apple.
I served in Nam in 1967 - 1968, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, 460th Field Maintenance Squadron, Transit Alert.
The photo you have is the last base I was on before being released from active service. 27th Tactical Fighter Wing, Cannon AFB, New Mexico. I was a crew chief on F-100 aircrafts. I was very lucky, I worked on several planes and went to school on several others F-102, RF-4c, F-100, F-111 and T-39. While in nam, any thing that came in that needed refeuling or tires changed.
Tan Son Nhut, for me, was or is a place that shall forever be incrusted in my mind. The time in the barracks, when two buddies and I walked in from the chow hall and a VC threw a grenade. I still think about how it dropped, in slow motion and I thougt this is it. Someone in the barracks yelled, "Hit The Floor." I jumped to the floor and so did Steve Landis, one of the two buddies but you know, Tony McLemore, jumped on top of Steve and me, to protect us.
Thank God, the grenade did not go off. As you know, the VC had defective weopons which didn`t always work.
Ok Charles, think this is all for now. Will send more stuff by and by.
Your friend,
Jose.

Comments: I had mentioned to Wayne about one week ago that I was waiting for this month's retirement check to come and and I would send my check for the Tan Son Nhut Association 2007 Reunion. I wrote my check today and mailed it.
The TSNA 2005 Reunion was our last one. It was my very first reunion, my sister and I had a wonderful time. Meeting all the people and now being able to put many faces to the names that I have been typing all these years. There were ninety-six (96) attendees at the last reunion.
I would like to meet all those individuals again and meet new ones also.

Comments: To all former 12th Tac Recon Squadron veterans:
The 2007 annual joint reunion of the 12th Tac Recon Squadron, the 11th Tac Recon Squadron, and the 6166th Air Weather Recon Flight is scheduled at the Radisson Plaza in Kalamazoo, Michigan, September 21st through 24th, 2007.
The 6166th Weather Flight and the ECM (Electronic CounterMeasures) Flight, both part of the 12th Tac Recon Squadron, were combined in September 1953 at Kimpo K-14 Air Base in Korea, to form the 11th Tac Recon Squadron. So the 12th was sort of the Big Daddy to the 11th, and that's why we have joint reunions.
We welcome anyone who has ever served in any of these units at any time. Currently most of our members are from the Korean War era, although a fair number of the WW2 veterans still show up and a few from the Vietnam War era are attending as well. I've been told that a WW1 1917-18 12th Observation Squadron veteran came to one of the reunions back in the 1980s, but he has since passed away.
So if you want to add Spitfire, Mustang, and Douglas RB-26C "There I Wuz" stories to your suspension of disbelief files, please join us. We are reaching out to the Vietnam War veterans in particular, as most are now at the age where they begin thinking about getting together.
If you are interested in joining us please phone, write, or e-mail:
Dr. Jim Van Hare
7545 Arborcrest St.
Portage, MI 49024-5001

Please provide your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address and I will add you to our mailing list and immediately send you an interim newsletter concerning our reunion.

Greeting-
I served with the U. S. Army (ETS'd as a Sgt, E-5, an abundant species back then), 58th Trans Bn, 34th Geneneral Support Group at Tan Son Nhut, from Aug 1966 to late March 1968. We saw some blood (VC) spilled by the Air Police in Tet 1967, but that offensive was quickly suppressed.
Tet 1968 was a radically different situation. We sent our task force platoon out to the flight line. They caught hell, but prevailed. I participated in the defense of the MACV Annex. The enemy would surge in from the golf course. Then they'd get shot to pieces by our Cobra's and our firepower and back off and regroup. That was the pattern: surge in, back off, regroup, surge in, back off, etc. The situation looked kind of grim for us that first day (Jan 31, 1968).
That afternoon, I asked our platoon leader, a 2nd lieutenant, if he thought we'd survive the day. He shook his head and said he didn't know. That evening I was assigned to our task force for night operations, at the north-east corner (I'm not sure of the location) of the flight line.
We were told to grab dinner at the Air Force mess. While standing in line, a large rattan curtain behind us, began jumping up and down along with a splattering racket, which were bullets from the golf course. We hit the ground.
A couple of Air Force guys on a veranda, drinking beer above us got killed, I recall.
We were trucked to our "Area of Operation" and took up positions on high ground along the perimeter, about 150 yards from the fence. There were three platoons of us, the other two from the 69th Signal Bn., if my recollection is accurate.
We also were re-enforced with a rocket squad, from 1st Infantry and an ARVN tank equipt with a dual fifty cal.
We also had a C-47 with gatling guns, on the starboard side at our disposal. Whenever the enemy attempted to breach the fence, the C-47 would hose them down, and we picked off the stragglers. Really, it was like shooting fish in a barrel.
Most of us had M-14's, not M-16's. We were by no means crack, elite warriors. No, most of us were clerks and mechanics, who had to rise to a bad occasion. We were woefully under-trained, inexperienced, and under-strength. Years later, I hunted deer in Colorado and became a far better marksman then I was back then.
Highway-1, ran through our free-fire zone. About 0100 hours, a Renault taxi sped through our sector on the highway. They responded to our command to halt with automatic fire. A soldier in our platoon dumped an M-79 grenade right in their laps! The grenade concussed and the taxi rolled off the highway. Later, about 0200-0230 hours, we detected people making their way across our free-fire zone. They were ordered to halt but didn't stop. I heard the rattle of an M-60, and they all dropped in their place and were still. The morning light revealed an three individuals. The old man was dragging a sack with clothing and food.
No weapons, no explosives.
In retrospect, I'm grateful I wasn't the trigger man on that M-60. The memory of the silhoette of those three tragic souls dissolving into the dust is still vivid though almost 40 years have passed.
There's more info I could share, but exhuming existential battlefields is depressing business. You gotta let it go, and live.

I worked in Crash Recovery, the bunch of outlaws which was located out by the runway, you may remember, "Big Bertha," the aircraft removal crane.
I was also stationed at Howard Air Force Base, Panama, from Jan 1969 to Jan 1973 working on first C-47's.
The Air Force got rid of them, then we got C-123's from Nam and one them was the "White Whale," I helped to put the interior back cargo use. If my memory serves we ended up with 8 of the C-123's and we lost one in an airshow in South America. I was crew chief on tail number 54-656. Thank you for a great site I stumbled across it while trying to get some information about the attack on TSN 13 April 66.

I need any information on an explosion just outside the main gate between Nov 1965 and end of March 1966. I also need to know when some of our RF-101's were sent PCS to Udorn in mid 1966. I was in the 20th Tactical Reconnaisance Squadron at Udorn, Thailand. I don’t know what the squadron was at Tan Son Nhut, there was more than one.
Any information will help me with the Veterans Administration. Also does anyone know who did all the shooting on New Years Eve? We had holes in our houch, the next day.
Thanks for your help,

This is an outstanding site, but it has brought back a bad memory for me, as I was friends with SSgt Louis Taylor, KIA in Dec 1972. In fact, I was less than 100 yards from him when the rocket hit. Was that a book issued by the military or was that somthing I bought in the Post Exchange? I cannot even remember where the px was at anymore. This book was compiled by the University of Saigon and the University of Washington.
Any ideas? I will never forget where the hospital was, the gravel piles, or the road around the field to our tack site.
By the way the Tan Son Nhut Association should get a big "gold star" for membership.
When I first found TSNA you could put the whole membership on six pages. Now, there is not enough ink in Dalton, GA to print out the membership and that's in just a few years.
Congratulations?

Comments: I hope that you may be able to help me. If not directly, then indirectly.
My dad was stationed at Tan Son Nhut around 1968-1969. He was part of the fire department there on base. Please forgive my ignorance if I'm not getting the terminology correct.
Anyway, I am working on a 1/72nd scale model of a RF-4C Phantom II. This is one aircraft that I distinctly remember him talking about. What I want to do is see if I can get an image of the patch he would have worn and use it as a decal on the base that I plan to make.
There lies the problem. I've been able to locate a modern version of the 377th Combat Support Group. From what I understand it is really the same as it was 40 years ago. The problem I've run into is that I don't want to tip him off by asking too many questions.
He has said that he remembers it having crossed ladders and possibly a helmet. It was in the shape of the fireman's badge. If I'm not mistaken, it was red an yellow. I could be wrong.
I'm hoping that you might be able to help me out. If not, maybe point me in the right direction.
I know someone has to have a picture of it. It's just a matter of finding that person.
I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing your response.
Thank you,
Chad Kent

Comments: I was at "home" down town Saigon, the night of 31 Jan 1968. As I went to bed it was really noisy outside, lots of fireworks. Little did I know that the fireworks were actually firearms. When I woke very early the next morning, I heard the reports of action on base, and the streets around where I lived were empty.
It took a couple days until I caught a ride with a Navy individual on his motorcycle, out to base. Looked sort of weird, me with my flak jacket, helmet, M-16 and all riding on the back of a really nice bike. Sort of eerie riding through the road blocks, past the APC and tanks.
He dropped me off at the main gate, and I walked through almost like any other day. Of course once I made it back on base I was stuck there for about a week until things settled down and I could go back to my room, near the Central Market Place, down town Saigon.
The night of the eve of Tet, was interesting, but over the next few months the rockets landed all around my room, and the shop on base. I think they were trying for 100 rockets for 100 days. Luckily I made it unscathed, unfortunately a guy in my shop paid the ultimate price.
Lots of good and sad memories from that time.

I remembered him as we were in the same squadron (12th TRS) and both worked the night shift during Tet. I was not on Tan Son Nhut on 2/19 and couldn’t help him with the verification he needs.
It took 10 minutes of internet searching before I was on the phone with our former Flight Chief, CMSGT Lloyd Peterson (Ret).
He has good recall of the events as he was also wounded and was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions that night (his leadership during the attack prevented other planes from being lost). He is able to verify the wound and will help Wayne get the award he deserves. Sgt. Peterson told me that he saw the VFW Magazine article on the reunion and is interested in attending.

Comments: Hi my name is Wayne Sufficool. I was stationed at Tan Son Nhut, 1967 to 1969, as a crew chief on the RF-4C aircraft. Worked the night shift.
On Feb 19, 1968, I was performing maintenance on the RF-4C. I was working alone on the aircraft. While I was hooking the oxygen cart to the tow vehicle, enemy rockets started hitting the immediate flight line. At least one rocket hit a plane parked right across from the plane, I was working on. Shrapnel hit my right forearm causing bleeding and burns, I've been turned down for a purple heart, need eye witnesses. Any ideas on how to find guys I worked with, at Tan Son Nhut.
Thank you for any ideas.

I congratulate you all, for such a professional set up.
I'm kind of in a bind - I spent three TDY assignments between June 1970 and the end of April 1971. I have applied for disability/compensation due to Diabetes 2, sleep apnea and other conditions related to Agent Orange and Blue. My name is Brian Thibodeau and I was TDY from the 15th Air Force at March AFB, Riverside, CA. I was involved with updating and installing Crypto-Modems but spent most of my time, at the Enlisted Club and NCO Bar. At the time, I was 5'10" approximately 165lbs, dark hair and a quality mustache, which I was constantly getting into trouble with.
I didn't make friends due to the fact that the Air Force told me, "I was not there." No off base passes, no official status.
If anyone has a recollection of me please contact me at the above e-mail address. I would greatly appretiate any help. I know, I have a pictures but after moving so often it's difficult to put my hands on them.

Accident Summary:
Description of the accident: The US Army UH-1D departed Vinh Long Air Field at 0942 hours, on a valid flight clearance to Can Tho Air Field, Bear Cat Air Field, Long Binh, and due for a direct return to Vinh Long. The UH-1D departed the 24th Field Hospital Heliport at approximately 1554 hours, in a northwesterly direction. It continued to climb while executing a gentle right turn to avoid built up areas and the normal heavy air traffic in the Long Binh area. The climb and turn were continued until a south to southwest course was established and an estimated altitude of 1500 - 1800 feet MSL reached. Within a maximum of one minute from the time the course was established, at 1557 hours, an Air Force RF-101, which was being vectored to a GCA final at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, collided with the left top side of the UH-1D. The collision disintegrated the UH-1D's main rotor system and tore off the tail pylon at about station 270. The UH-1D fell in a southwesterly direction, nosing down and over, losing pieces of the air frame and other material stowed in the cabin section. The aircraft commander and gunner of the UH-1D were either thrown or jumped clear of the helicopter before impact. The UH-1D struck the ground in a nose down inverted attitude completely demolishing the helicopter. A post impact fire insued gutting all the wreckage except the pilot's compartment. After the collision the RF-101 experienced a flame out of the right engine. Full power on left engine failed to produce sufficient flying speed to control the aircraft. The RF-101 continued on a course of approximately 250 degrees and descending. The aircraft started to nose over uncontrolled at approximately 175 knots IAS. The pilot elected to eject. The ejection was successful although the pilot received major injuries from landing on his back. The RF-101 impacted in a level attitude approximately 3 1/2 miles from the assumed collision point and 3 miles from the UH-1D impact point.

Comments: Sorry it has been so long between communications.
I have been meaning to drop a few lines to let you know that I am back in Viet Nam. I had only intended to mention that fact and to make a few comments on the many changes which have occurred since I left here, in April of 1975, under somewhat hurried conditions but when I read your note about the passing of General Moore, I just felt compelled to write. I'm sure that General Brooks was a fine officer but I never had the opportunity to meet him.
I had the good fortune to have been at Tan Son Nhut from July 1964 thru July 1966. Most of that time, under the 2nd Air Division, while General Moore was commanding.
I worked out of the Comm/Nav shop on the flight line at night and was able to work part time at the Officers Open Mess during the day.
I was in the presence of General Moore on numerous occasions and I often witnessed his actions in dealing with enlisted personnel and junior officers. Rather than join his subordinate generals, in their private dining room, I have often seen him grab a tray, pass through the cafeteria line, and then ask a group of Lieutenants and Captains if he could join them.
Once when he was hosting a joint USAF and VNAF social even, I saw him get in line to get a drink behind about 12 or 15 young VNAF officers. I was supervising several of the bar tables and I walked up and asked if I could get him some thing. He thanked me graciously but refused my offer and said he would wait his turn.
I'm sure there are others who could provide much more insight into the character of the man but I for one never heard a bad word spoken about General Moore. I have never been more impressed by an officer, than I was by General Moore. I'm sure my fellow 2nd Air Division vets would join me in expressing condolences to his family and to his many friends.
God bless you, General Moore. You are well remembered.
Also, as I mentioned being back in Viet Nam, my wife and I are spending 5 months here with her family in the Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) area. Came over in November 2006 and returning in April 2007.
Thanks again for the amazing job you do with the web site.

Comments: The Tan Son Nhut Association has received several inquiries about the 2007 Reunion.
FYI: When we add up all of the costs to put on the 2007 reunion in Dayton, the average cost per person works out to be $103.00.
The Tan Son Nhut Association group determined that their members and guests will pay $99.00 each, to the Reunion Brat, as registration fees. The Association will pay the $4 difference to keep the registration fee at $99.00 for all members and guests of the TSNA.
The Scatback group determined that their members and guests will pay $103.00 each, to the Reunion Brat, as registration fees.
Note: For Scatbackers and their guests who are already members of the TSNA, the registration fee is the TSNA member's price of $99.00. You only need to register once for the combined TSNA - Scatback 2007 reunion.
It's not necessary to be a member of the TSNA to participate in the 2007 reunion in Dayton. However, if you are not presently a TSNA member, join now and pay the lower $99.00 reunion registration fee ... a $4.00 savings.

Comments: I was TDY to Tan Son Nhut, with the 1961st Communications Group, as a Ground Radio Operator, from July 1962 to January 2962. Also from February 1963 to July 1963.
Our radio station was outside the old chow hall, that was actually a WWII airplane hangar. My home unit was the 1st Mobile Communications Group based at Clark AB, PI. I was PCS there again from October 1966 to January 1967, moving to Cam Rahn Bay, in January 1967.
Spent the rest of 1963 and all of 1964 until November, with various TDY assignments, in Thailand, Don Muang AB, in Bangkok, Pittsanuluk, Ubon and Udorn. Was a member of the Udorn team that opened up that base for the USAF.
The Air Commandos and Air America, has been operating from there for a while. The flight line was filled with T-28’s, H-34’s and C-46’s, all shiny metal with no markings. The 1962 - 1963 time period was the best,
no curfews. We spent real money, not MPC’s and the danger was minimal.
Re-enlisted once and thought about staying in, then got stationed at Hunter AAF, Savannah, GA., with 20,000 ground pounders and 100 USAF blue suiters.
After 29 months, I was convinced that attending college was my best course of action.
Would love to hear from anyone who remembers the days before curfews and military payment certificates.
